In the history of the ECASHL, eight teams – Buffalo Sabres, Hartford Whalers, Montreal Canadiens,
Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets - have
made the playoffs each of the six seasons. Five teams have made the post-season in five of the six years.
The Quebec Nordiques and San Jose Sharks have never made the playoffs.
After five previous seasons, the ECASHL has had four different champions, with the Montreal Canadiens
holding the honors as the only champions with multiple titles (S1, S3). The other champs include the
Edmonton Oilers (S2), New Jersey Devils (S4) and Pittsburgh Penguins (S5). Three different teams have
been runners-up - the Detroit Red Wings (S1,S3, S5), Washington Capitals (S2) and Edmonton Oilers (S4).
This year, the Pittsburgh Penguins, last season’s champion, are the #5-seeded team in the Eastern
Conference, while the Detroit Red Wings, last season’s runner up, are the #1-seeded team in the
Western Conference.
After six seasons, every team to win the Cup has returned to the playoffs the following year. And every
team to make an appearance in the Cup Finals has returned to the post-season as well.
So will a new franchise join the four previous champions with a Cup or will someone just add to their
